Day 19 NaPoWriMo – Haiku update – India and Japan merge
Published April 19, 2013 by Laura Crean AuthorOn Tuesday I am going into my daughter’s classroom and as it is National Poetry Writing Month that is what I am going to do with the children – read some of my poetry and then link poetry to their school topic which is India. After thinking long and hard about how I can do this in the short time that I have, I have decided to use Haiku Poetry. I think this is quite a fun thing to do as it will be mixing 2 cultures together – writing on an Indian theme with a Japanes style poem.
Even though I have decided as most modern poets probably will that you don’t need to write Haiku poems with the traditional 5-7-5 pattern, I think schools still teach it that way. So I have very quickly written 3 Haiku poems with the 5-7-5 pattern on the theme of India for the children as an example, I am making a mood board to take in and then they will be able to write their own using the themes expressed on the mood board as inspiration.

a red candle floating by
prayers and petals too
dancing with her hands
worshipping and having fun
a gift from the gods

he has so many faces

Day 19 National Poetry Writing Month – Haiku Poetry
Published April 19, 2013 by Laura Crean AuthorToday I thought I would attempt some Haiku poems. I will not be sticking to the 5 – 7 – 5 rule but will be using the nature and seasonal themes and using 3 short lines to create a poetic image. ideas I have kept in mind when constructing my Haiku poems are to perhaps have a seasonal word, possibly a couple of sensory images, the idea of a surprise ending and juxtoposing 2 ideas.
cloudy sky shifting
a lonely log
welcomes silence
a seed falls
the bird swoops
a squirrel sneaks in
spring sends showers
the tulip drinks
snow sends a frozen surprise
a tiger
long grass
hidden enemy
warm summer night
cool blue moon
long silent shadows
clouds in spring
warm breeze rises
rain turns to soft mist
fox in meadow
finds a daisy bed
owl exploring
